You find the Holy Grail for your collection. The listing states, "VG+ (Very Good Plus)". You become overjoyed. You make the payment. The mailer arrives at your door. You begin to slip the record out of its—well, Tesco carrier bag packaging, or bin liners (very classy)—and... what the hell is this? It's not what I ordered? It's a SCAM! It looks almost like the previous owner used it as a frisbee for their husky to have a munch on. You think, "Well, let's not give up hope yet. Let's give it a spin..." Nope. It sounds like someone is frying bacon next to a microphone with a slightly distorted voice in the background.
Rest assured, at WholeLottaVinyl, we experienced this as collectors before we branched out, turning our love for collecting into a business to create a little glimmer of hope for online vinyl commerce. We decided to do things differently—let's call it elevating the industry standard.
The Great Vinyl Grading Myth 🔍
Most online record businesses and sellers use the Standard Goldmine or Record Collector grading systems. In theory, the system is great. In practice? It's completely broken. Why? Because too many dealers grade with "HOPE" instead of the human gift of their EYES and EARS. They look at a record from three feet away under dim, or even natural light, see that it's not literally snapped in half, and label it VG+. Sometimes they do not even check for signs of a warp in the vinyl. What is the world coming to? It's the end of the world as we know it, right?
That is not how we roll here. We don't just guesstimate; we audit hardcore style.
The WholeLottaVinyl Grading Standard (No screeching, crackling, skipping, or jumping allowed) When you browse through our listings, you will see explicit, uncompromising grades for both the Sleeve and the Media (the vinyl record itself). For example: VG+/VG (where VG+ = Media, and VG = Cover and any inner accompaniments, such as leaflets, posters, photographs, etc.).
Mint (M): Vinyl is unplayed and the cover is sealed and unopened (often still factory-sealed).
Near Mint (NM): Vinyl is unplayed (the vinyl hasn't developed wear in the grooves yet), and the cover has been opened but has no rips, tears, or damage at all.
Excellent (EX): Vinyl has been played but has zero scratches throughout. The cover has minor wear but no rips or tears.
Very Good Plus (VG+): Vinyl has been played but has up to a handful of hairline scratches (none feelable). The cover has minor wear and light rips, but the spine is fully visible, clearly showing the text.
Very Good (VG): Vinyl has been played and has numerous hairline scratches and easily noticeable scratches all over the vinyl (none feelable). The cover has heavier wear and can have splits, rips, and tears. The spine is partially visible, showing part of the text.
Good Plus (G+): Vinyl has been played and has numerous hairline scratches and easily noticeable scratches all over, including feelable scratches that can cause skips, pops, and jumps in most cases. The cover has a lot of imperfections like splits, rips, and tears, and a non-visible spine.
Good (G): Vinyl has been played and has seen better days. It has both feelable and non-feelable scratches, making the vinyl unplayable. The cover is heavily damaged and could display the following: rips, splits, tears, water damage, food or drink spills, unglued seams, and a damaged spine.
Please note that all vinyl records are cleaned to a high standard before being packaged and shipped.

1. Inspection is Key
We inspect every single piece of pre-loved vinyl under high-intensity, 5000K-balanced natural light with our grading lamps. This exposes the tiny "sleeve-pull" hairlines and potential scratches that standard indoor or natural window light completely hides. If a record has a flaw, we want to see it first, so we can tell you about it before you buy. We do not want our fantastic customers to have to think, "Are you experienced?"
2. We Grade Cautiously (We'd Rather Under-Promise) If we are stuck debating whether a record is a high VG+ or a low Near Mint, we always choose the lower grade. Why? Because we want you to open your mailer and think, "Wow, this is beyond what I expected!" rather than, "Why did I spend my hard-earned money on this?"
3. Separate Grading (Because Sleeves and Vinyl Are Different) We always grade independently (e.g., Media: VG+ / Sleeve: VG). You know exactly what's going into your record collection and onto your turntable.
4. Packaged by People Who Actually Love Music We don't just throw your records into a flimsy cardboard envelope (or remember that classy bin liner) and then pray to the courier Gods, especially Relay. We pack them securely in heavy-duty, bespoke vinyl mailers with stiffeners and plastic outer sleeves for your record to make a home in. This prevents any damage during transit, whilst adding a protective, coat-like layer when our British weather isn't being very fair.
